Lifelong Learning Series: The Wonders of the Winter Night Sky

Jan 29, 2020 | Life at Ávila

On a crisp, cool night in upstate New York, have you ever looked up and gazed in awe at the universe? At Ávila, many of us love to learn more about the world around us. We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Valerie Rapson from The Dudley Observatory to teach us more about everything we see when we’re stargazing during these winter months.

Did you know that constellations of stars are easier to see in the winter season? The atmosphere above is calmer and drier during this phase, so we can more clearly see the stars in these unique groupings together. Dr. Rapson explained that because the Earth is always moving, the stars we’re able to see constantly changes throughout the year.

Many of our residents are big fans of beauty and nature. So to learn even more about the beautiful scenery we see from our lawns and balconies was a real treat!

Our Lifelong Learning Series brings experts on a variety of topics to speak and present to the Ávila community. Our residents often express that they feel so lucky to have this resource to enhance their retirement experience. We’re big fans of learning, and they are, too!

Winter can be an opportune time to invest in indoor activities like fitness classes, educational presentations, arts and crafts, and more. We hope you’re inspired to learn something new this winter, just like us!
